Following Your Ancestor's Trails Through a Genealogy Society

Visiting a genealogy society is a great way to get help following your ancestor's trails and meet some new friends as well. Genealogy societies offer a variety of information available to the public to further your research. Books written by other genealogist, files about their research, city directories, maps, microfilm, and published books containing a variety of records are just a few of the holdings they have. Some societies even have internet access and subscriptions to popular genealogy information sites such as Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com to assist in your research endeavors.

The societies are usually staffed by volunteers, who are more than willing to help you in your search for your ancestors. To locate a society you can check with your local library and ask them if they know where the nearest society is and remember to always call and check about the hours they are open before you visit because they are voluntarily staffed and usually keep limited hours. Your local library may even have a genealogy section or actually house the genealogy society as in my area. The library may even have a subscription to Heritage Quest that you could access at home for free using your library card. Don't forget books about genealogy as well as historical books about the surrounding areas to help give you a feel about the conditions your ancestors where in that may give you a clue to further your research.

Consider joining a society either near you or in the area your ancestors lived, the cost is low and the benefits out weight the investment. Societies generally have publications that are mailed to you and contain historical information about the area they're in. Members can publish their stories and genealogies, as well as make requests for information from other members working on lineages in the same area. To find a genealogy society in your area via the Internet, visit http://www.censusfinder.com/genealogy-society-directory.htm where you can search by state. It's a great social networking system to help you reach out and further your family tree.
